Experimental evaluation of psychophysical distortion metrics for JPEG-encoded images

چکیده
Two experiments for evaluating psychophysical distortion metrics for JPEG-encoded images are described. The first is a threshold experiment, in which subjects determined the bit rate or level of distortion at which distortion was just noticeable. The second is a suprathreshold experiment in which subjects ranked image blocks according to perceived distortion. The results of these experiments were used to determine the predictive value of a number of computer image distortion metrics. It was found that mean-square-error is not a good predictor of distortion thresholds or suprathreshold perceived distortion. Some simple pointwise measures were in good agreement with psychophysical data; other more computationally intensive metrics involving spatial properties of the human visual system gave mixed results. It was determined that mean intensity, which is not accounted for in the JPEG algorithm, plays a significant role in perceived distortion. ... Read complete abstract on page 2.

Noisy images-JPEG compressed: subjective and objective image quality evaluation
The aim of this work is to study image quality of both single and multiply distorted images. We address the case of images corrupted by Gaussian noise or JPEG compressed as single distortion cases and images corrupted by Gaussian noise and then JPEG compressed, as multiply distortion case. Subjective studies were conducted in two parts to obtain human judgments on the single and multiply distor...
متن کاملVISUALLY LOSSLESS CODING FOR COLOR AERIAL IMAGES USING JPEG 2000 Graduate Students :
This paper describes a psychophysical experiment to measure visibility thresholds (VT) for quantization distortion in JPEG2000 and an associated quantization algorithm for visually lossless coding of color aerial images. The visibility thresholds are obtained from a quantization distortion model based on the statistical characteristics of wavelet coefficients and the deadzone quantizer of JPEG2...
متن کاملPerceptual Distorsion Metrics for JPEG Images EE392 Project
JPEG is a standard compression algorithm used to reduce memory requirement for the storage of digital images. The JPEG standard allows to specify the desired quality of the encoded image by varying a quality factor (QFactor) between 0 (lowest quality) and 100 (perfect image-no compression). It is of interest to be able to assess the quality of a JPEG image. A common and very effective way for t...
متن کاملAssessment of Full Color Image Quality with Singular Value Decomposition
In subjective evaluation of distorted images, human observers usually consider the type of distortion, the amount of distortion, and the distribution of error. We recently proposed an image quality measure, M-SVD, for gray-scale images that can be used as a graphical tool to predict the distortion based on these three factors, and also as a numerical tool to assess the overall visual quality of...
متن کاملNew Adaptive Image Quality Assessment Based on Distortion Classification
This paper proposes a new adaptive image quality assessment (AIQA) method, which is based on distortion classifying. AIQA contains two parts, distortion classification and image quality assessment. Firstly, we analysis characteristics of the original and distorted images, including the distribution of wavelet coefficient, the ratio of edge energy and inner energy of the differential image block...
